- quote -
Jaki or Jyaki 邪鬼 or Amano Jyaku 天邪鬼
Tentōki 天燈鬼 and Ryūtōki 龍燈鬼

Jaki is the name of the tiny creatures the four kings stand upon.
Classified as members of the Yaksha in Japan; also referred to as the Amano Jyaku (Heaven Jyaku). In a tradition unique to Japan, the Jaki demons are sometimes represented by two creatures known as Tentōki (Tentoki) 天燈鬼 and Ryūtōki (Ryutoki) 龍燈鬼, which translate literally as Celestial-Lamp Demon and Dragon-Lamp Demon.
Japanese legends say these two creatures were originally evil, but after getting trampled by the Shitennō, they repented, were saved, and now carry lanterns as offerings of light to the Buddha, or to light up the road in front of the Shaka Nyorai (Historical Buddha).
The Jaki and Tentōki / Ryūtoki symbolize the power of the Shitennō to repel and defeat evil. Two wonderful sculptures of Tentōki and Ryutōki can be found at Kōfukuji Temple in Nara

..................................................................................................................................................................

The amanojaku is commonly held to be derived from
Amanosagume
(天探女), a wicked deity in Shintō myth, which shares the amanojaku's contrary nature and ability to see into a person's heart, "a very perverted demon".

The creature has also entered Buddhist thought, perhaps via syncretism with the yasha, where it is considered an opponent of Buddhist teachings. It is commonly depicted as being trampled on and subdued into righteousness by Bishamonten or one of the other Shitennō.
In this context it is also called a jaki (邪鬼).

In 内海 Utsumi there are statues of the 四天王 Shitenno with a podestal of the Jaki. It used to be a ganja 岩座 rock podestal, but the Jaki took pity on the four deities on this hard seat and offered themselves as seat.

MINGEI - chasen tea whisk

chasen 茶筅 / 茶筌 / 茶せん tea whisk

One of the items used in the tea ceremony is the tea whisk.

. Tea Ceremony Saijiki 茶道の歳時記 .
- Introduction -

Bamboo is not only useful, it's edible, in the form of 筍 (takenoko, bamboo shoots). The empty hollow of bamboo sections can be used in preparing food as well as for carrying it after it's cooked. Bamboo can also be used to make various utensils. Take 箸 (hashi, chopsticks) and 竹べら (takebera, the bamboo spatula used to scoop steamed rice), as well as
茶筅 (chasen, a bamboo whisk used in the tea ceremony).
. Bamboo (take 竹) - Introduction .

..............................................................................................................................................

- quote -
A tea whisk used to whip powdered green tea, matcha 抹茶, and hot water in a tea bowl until it froths.

a) chajimi 茶じみ b) hosaki 穂先 c) karami-ito 絡み糸 d) jiku 軸 e) fushi 節

The whisk is made from one piece of bamboo about 2 to 2 1/2 cm thick and from 9cm to 12cm long. Near one end is a node. A little beyond the node on the longer end, string is interlaced, karami-ito 絡み糸, to hold the longer ends which are split finely into a varying number of extremely thin strips. The string is intertwined to create two rows of strips. Those on the outer edge have their tips curved inwardly, and those pulled toward the center have their tips curved out. This creates a double tipped whisk.
Whisks are classified by the number of tips: those having 80 to 120 or more are called multi-tipped; those with fewer are designated medium or sparse.
White bamboo is preferred by the Ura Senke 裏千家 School;
sooty bamboo by the Omote Senke 表千家 School;
green or purplish bamboo by the Kankyuu'an 官休庵 School.

- ABC - List of Chasen from the Prefectures

................................................................................ Nara 奈良県

quote
Takayama Tea Whisks
Among the foreigners who are interested in Japanese culture, many may find tea ceremony quite interesting. Beautiful shades of green, delicate and deliberate mannerisms and a spirit of gracious service are some of its most appealing aspects. Tools that are used for tea ceremony are also very traditional and may be found only in Japan.
Chasen is a necessity for tea ceremony. It is a tool that looks like a whisk.

It is not for whipping but for mixing hot water and tea powder evenly, a process that determines the texture and taste of the tea. Takayama cho in Ikoma city生駒市, Nara prefecture is known for its 400-year Chasen production history, and its market share is more than 90% of the entire nation's.
Takayama Chasen is registered as one of the Traditional Crafts of Japan.
A typical Chasen
is constructed with 64 pieces each for its inside and outside, for a total of 128 thinly cut bamboo peels. These are divided into two sections, inside and outside, after being tied together at their ends. Then, each piece is gently stretched to create curves, using only one's fingertips and a small knife. Although much time and effort is needed to create a Chasen, it is not durable. In fact, some of them reach the end of their lifespan after a single use. Even if you are careful, it will only last several times at most.
A famous Japanese proverb, "Ichigo ichie",
means that only one opportunity exists for one meeting. In other words, each moment is precious because each moment will never be the same. "Serving tea means this very moment of spending time together will never repeat itself again. Therefore, I will present the best tea I can for you."
Japan's grand master of tea, Sen Rikyu, taught this way of thinking. By looking at the delicate feminine shape of Chasen, one is filled with a sense of serenity, and remembers the words of this tea master.

The Chasen (or bamboo matcha whisk) is an integral part of Chanoyu, the Japanese tea ceremony. It is used to make the powdered green tea called Matcha in a bowl. These days, many types of Chasen can be found in various colors and thickness. The highest quality whisks are made by hand, including the detailed work of curling the thin strands of bamboo.

Buson Yokai Emaki 蕪村妖怪絵巻 Buson Monster Scroll

. Yosa Buson 与謝蕪村 (1715 - 1783) Painter and Poet .
- Introduction -

..............................................................................................................................................

おれのはらのかわをためしてみおれ、にゃあ、にゃあ
try to shoot the skin of my belly, nyaa, nyaa

He painted this scroll while he was living in 丹後 Tango, 京都府宮津市 Kyoto, Miyazu city from 1754 - 1757.
The original did not show any colors, but a replica (like the above copy) introduced some colors to it.

A replica had been found in 1928 in 北田紫水文庫, a library.
There are 8 scrolls, each showing a Yokai with an explanation, which Buson might have encountered during his extensive travels in Japan.
The Yokai paintings are rather humorous and not so much scary, maybe reflecting Buson's history of a 俳画 Haiga painter.

The eight Yokai introduced are

- quote -
Shirime 尻目 lit. "buttocks eye" - "butt eye"
is a strange yōkai with an eye in the place of his anus.
The story goes as follows:
Long ago, a samurai was walking at night down the road to Kyōto, when he heard someone calling out for him to wait. "Who's there?!" he asked nervously, only to turn around and find a man stripping off his clothes and pointing his bare buttocks at the flabbergasted traveler. A huge glittering eye then opened up where the strange man's anus should have been.

This creature was so liked by the haiku poet and artist Buson, he included it in many of his yōkai paintings.

The mountain range consists of two volcanic groups, Northern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group and Southern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group.
..... According to legend, Yatsugatake was once higher than Mount Fuji, but Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess of Mount Fuji, tore it down out of jealousy, leaving the collection of peaks we have today.

"The Evil Omatsu"

鬼神お松 くどき Kijin O-Matsu kudoki

quote -
Omatsu, usually referred to as 'Evil Omatsu', is loosely based on an historical figure: a woman outcast who used her beauty to escape her origins. The popular version falls into the female poisoner genre. Omatsu is said to have become a courtesan, seduced, married and murdered Shirosaburo, a blind samurai, become an outlaw, and ended up as leader of the bandit gang.

The prevalence of female outlaws, poisoners, ghosts, bandits, outlaws and warriors in folk tales and in ukiyo-e and kabuki dramas represent two competing ideas ..  on the one hand, they may reflect the growing status of women as Japan moved towards post Tokugawa feudalism, on the other hand they may represent the fear and anger at what was perceived as a female threat to the social order of things. In early modern British society for example, the threat of women poisoners ... particularly those who poisoned their husband was actually very small, but public apprehension of the threat was stoked by one or two show trials and the publication of block printed news sheets that whipped up a frenzy of fear and rage in the male populace.

Either way, Evil Omatsu was the subject of kabuki plays and the public were clearly thrilled at her exploits ...
albeit fictional.

The temple was related to the temple 中野村 宝仙寺 Hosen-Ji in Nakano.
The temple is now part of the New 100 Scenic Spots of Tokyo, famous for its cherry blossoms.

The daughter 和子 Masako of Shogun 徳川秀忠 Tokugawa Hidetada was cured of an eye illness after praying here, so this Yakushi is now known to cure eye diseases.

The statue of Yakushi  is said to have been carved by Kobo Daishi, with 如意輪観音 Nyoirin Kannon at the back side, as a double-statue, covered with gold.
The statue belonged to the 新田氏 Nitta clan in the Kamakura period and was then lost.
Much later in the 南北朝 Nanboku period in 1586 a monk named Gyoshun built a hermitage to pray for peace of the country. At night he could see a special light at the bottom of a plum tree and when he took a closer look at the place, he found the statue of the Nitta clan.
The name of the temple reflects this episode:
Bai Sho In 梅照院 Hermitage of the Shining Plum Tree
The statue is now secret, shown only every 12 years in the 寅年 Year of the Tiger.
