Explanation

Iwafune Festival is held in order to pray for safety at sea, a bountiful catch and for good business. It is a dynamic festival befitting to the fishery town of Iwafune in Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture. It is designated as a prefecture's intangible Cultural property.

The festival starts with the beats of Saki-daiko (the leading drum) at midnight on October 19. Then Saki-daiko goes around the route of the parade three times in the early morning to purify the way of the god's excursion.

The shrine deity is loaded onto the magnificent vermillion multi-lacquered Ofune-sama (boat) at the shrine gate and carried to the Otorii Gate accompanied by Mikoshi, Tamayari and the float carrying a sacred horse. When the parade gets to the torii gate, Ofune-sama is loaded onto "Ofune-yatai (the Ship float)," which is joined by eight other floats called "Shagiri."

Then the parade led by Ofune-sama Shagiri goes through the town accompanied by ohayashi festival music and the festival folksong, "Kiyari-bushi." The Shagiri parade continues until late at night when the deity of the shrine finally carried onto the back mountain behind the shrine. The round voices of Kiyari-bushi singers echo through the town filled with autumn colors.

岩船大祭は、神様が「石の舟」でこの地にお越しになったという伝説に由来する、石船(いわふね)神社の例祭。また、「舟囲い」とも謂われ、その年の海の恵み・山の恵み・あらゆる生業(なりわい)に感謝する、この地方の一年を締めくくる秋祭りです。

さすがに圏域の玄関口として栄えてきた港町の祭りと思わせるのは、行列の先頭を行く『御舟屋台』。拝殿から大鳥居まで若衆に担がれ参道の階段を下り、屋台に移される「御舟」は、漆(うるし)を何度も重ねて朱色に塗った豪華なもの。

人々があげ申す「木遣り唄」に合わせ、玉槍、御神輿、おしゃぎり屋台(9台)が町中を練り歩く勇壮なこのお祭りは、たくさんの提灯の明かりに揺られながら、去りゆく季節を惜しむかのように「ともやま」行事が終わる夜おそくまで続きます。

A traditional ceremony is held in Iwafune Shrine as a part of this festival. After this, the Oshagiri Yatai floats decorated with Tsuishu and Tsuikoku (kinds of lacquer) are carried around the town. The parade is led by the Ohunesama (boat) on the Dashi float, a common feature of a port town.

伝説によれば、慶長年間に新田義貞の子孫四郎兵衛義晴当地に居城を構え、家宝の剱を神体として素戔嗚尊を祀り、後に菊理姫命を合祀して新田氏の氏神とし、後には木住部落全体の崇敬するところとなった。昭和21年に山田郷神社より分離し当部落にあった気多神社、度会神社を合祀して、木住神社を創立した。3月28日花祭に鬼討ちと称し、鬼面を描き、参詣人が竹の弓矢で射的した後、白と草の餅で小さい菱餅を作り、太鼓の拍子に合わせて参詣人に撤餅し、その間、有志のものが桃花の枝を持って即興的に踊り、これを花踊りと称していたが今は踊る者がない。

Spring festival to pray for a good harvest, health and safety of the family.
A painting of saru-oni 猿鬼 Monkey-Demon is hung on a tree in the Shrine compound and then the Shrine parishioners shoot an arrow each at this demon.
After that they take branches with peach blossoms in both hands and perform a funny dance. The whole compound is then filled with laughter.

藩政末期に一旭上人という僧が 島にやって来て、毎晩観音堂に島民 を集めて説教をしていた。ところが、 いつも末座に若い女がじっと聞きい っているので、ある晩上人がたずね ると、女は「私はこの池に棲む竜な のです。難破船の錨の毒にあたって 死んだのですが、未だに成仏できずにいます。どう か助けてください。」と涙を流してたのむのだった。
そこで翌朝、島民が池の水をくみ上げたところ、 池の底から大小二体の骨が見つかった。骨は樽四 杯分にもなった。
この母子の竜骨は法蔵寺分院に葬られた。人々 は父親の竜が現在も近くの海に生息していると考え、 神として祭って無他神社とした。
この竜神池は周囲約180mあり、底が竜宮城に 通じていて決して水が枯れることは無いといわれている。
観昔堂は中北組と上北組が管理している。

恵比須神社 Ebisu Jinja
島の北東に位置し、漁業繁栄の 祈願所で、恵比須大神を祭っている。 島にある七つの小宮の一つで、恵 比須組と大北組が管理している。
舳倉島へ一斉渡島の行っていた 頃は、島へ着くとまず目分の所管 の小宮へ組の全員が集まって今年 の稼業の安全祈願を行い、お神酒五升を飲んで夜を明かした。この行 事を「ゴショウヅイヤ」(五升通夜)と呼んでいる。
そして、それが済むと島民全員が総本社の奥津比咩神社に集まり、 区長が主宰して一年間のいろいろな決まり事を相談する総会を開き、 最後に全員で飲み明かしたといわれる。これが「ナカマヅイヤ」(仲問 通夜)である。また一年の稼業を終えて一斉離島する時はその逆で「レ イヅイヤ」(礼通夜)が行われていた。

Nafune Taisai 名舟大祭 Great festival at Nafune
July 31st / August 1st // at Nafune-machi, Wajima City

This festival features participants wearing demon masks and seaweed head gear and culminates in a frenzy of wild drumming.
輪島キリコ Kiriko is like mikoshi (portable shrine), but it is set up not a portable shrine but a tall lantern on the frame. On the lantern, beautiful pictures or characters are painted.

Cheers for kiriko lanterns climbing a steep hill
Nafune-machi, Wajima City is known for its Gojinjo drum performance.
Legend has it that when the army of the lord of Echigo, Kenshin Uesugi, attacked Noto, it was driven away by masked fishermen of Nafune Village beating their drums. People thanked the deity Okutsuhime of Hegura Island for this blessing, and started to play the drums at the festival of Okutsuhime Shrine.
The first highlight of the festival starts at 9:00 pm on the first evening of the festival. The kiriko lanterns gather at Hakusan Shrine, a detached worship place of Okutsuhime Shrine. Hakusan Shrine is located on a steep cliff. The people carrying the lanterns climb the hill carefully so as not to fall, and are encouraged by the cheers of the audience. After that, the kiriko lanterns and the portable shrine are carried to Nafune Beach.
The portable shrine is carried on a boat to the torii gate in the sea to meet the deity of Okutsuhime Shrine on Hegura Island. After the portable shrine returns to the beach, the performance of Gojinjo drums starts. The fearful demon masks and dynamic sound of the drums are impressive. After 11 o'clock at night, the portable shrine and kiriko lanterns are paraded through the town, and a kiriko performance takes place in the square.

The origin of Gojinjyo Taiko dates back to 1576,when it is reputed to have saved the villege of Nafune on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture from an offencive launched by the well-known war lord,Kenshin Uesugi, to invade the interior region of Noto. In courageous attempt to defend their native land,the villagers penetrated the Uesugi ranks under cover of darkness,wearing masks of bark and with seaweed on their heads to give the appearance of tangled long hair.
The Uesugi camp
was thrown into confusion at the unexpected sound of their Jintaiko, or battle drums.and the unearthly appearance.They fled from the region in due haste.
It is said that the tremendous noises heard that night were the sounds of Gojinjo Taiko.
Gojinjo Taiko was designated as Intangible Cultural Asset by Wajima City in 1961 , and by Ishikawa Prefecture in 1963.

Kadomatsu are placed in front of houses, temples, shrines and official buildings to welcome the New Year deity, purify the entrance and drive demons and evil spirits out.

pine and bamboo 松 竹は「鬼の木」 are trees which the Oni dislike most.
'Pine lasts for 1000 years and bamboo for 10,000 years'
is an old Japanese proverb. Pine and bamboo are popular materials for kadomatsu because people wish that Yorishiro, the place in which the deity lives, will last forever.

On the island 薩南大島 Satsunan Oshima people put out Kadomatsu for the New Year.
Once upon a time,
an Oni had come down from the sky to haunt the island, but the villagers caught him and bound him to a pine tree. The strong Oni pulled out the tree and run away. They caught him again and bound him again to a pine tree, this time so strong that he could not run away. Since that time the Oni are afraid of pine trees.


Once upon another time



they put up a Kadomatsu with bamboo in the middle, so that the Oni hurt his stomach when climbing on it, and the Oni died.
Since then people put up Kadomatsu with bamboo.

On the island 加計呂麻島 Kakeroma they put out Kadomatsu with bamboo.
The villagers know that once an Oni hurt his stomach when climbing on it, and the Oni died.
Once upon a time, the villagers had tied a rabbit to the Kadomatsu pine tree. The oni came and pulled the tree out with its roots. The villagers followed the imprints of the roots on the ground and could eventually get the rabbit back.
Since then the Oni are afraid when they see a pine tree and do not come close to a home with such a decoration.

Once a villager got up early in the morning on the first day of the New Year. He saw three strange black clouds in the sky.
This was the figure of an Oni who had turned up to heaven in great fear when seeing the Kadomatsu in front of a home.

For the Setsubun ritual (the former New Year ritual), people used to put out a holly branch with the head of a sardine to ward off the Oni.
When making a Kadomatsu, they used two strong stakes, a bamboo basket with many "eyes", a black pot hanger and a branch of hiiragi 柊 holly. The beans for throwing had to be roasted very well.

If people walk through the pines of the Kadomatsu decoration, they will become Oni.

Once Nobutaro went with a friend to 有明山 Mount Ariakeyama.
When they tried to jump over the Tenguiwa 天狗岩 Tengu boulder, their bodies became an enormous in size and they jumped over 馬羅尾谷 Baraodani valley and disappeared.
Nobutaro's father 久作 Kyusaku, who had lost his only son, went everywhere to look for him. He could not find him and had to work in the fields all alone from that time on.
He build a small sanctuary for Nobutaro, 信の宮 Nobu no Miya.

Ariake-yama (2268m)
Today, rather few people know Ariake-yama.
Of those who do, not many pay the mountain much regard. And, although the ridgeways between Yari-ga-take and Tsubakuro may be crowded enough to qualify as an Alpine "Ginza", fewer still pay much attention to Ariake-yama even when they find it rearing up at them on their way to the foot of Tsubakuro. Rather, their eyes are drawn to the more imposing heights beyond. Ariake, it seems, has been consigned to the meizan of past ages.

In former times, though, people would direct their gaze not to those indistinct higher peaks but to the shapely mountain right in front of them, revering Ariake-yama as the Mt Fuji of Shinano Province. In an age when the Northern Alps were still "terra incognita",
Ariake was celebrated by no less a poet than Monk Saigyō:

In Shinano on a day
It sent me awestruck on the way
To Hosono, the sight
Of mighty Ariake on the right


And then there are these lines by Monk Yūgyō:

By this moon's kindly light
I will not lose the narrow
Road to Hosono, although
It leads me under Ariake's height

According to an old chronicle, the mountain was opened in the second year of Daidō (807), when the great avatar Tohanachi Gongen was enshrined there at a place sacred to Ame-no-Uzume, where this goddess of dawn, mirth and revelry had manifested herself as a Buddha to save all living things. The mountain was once called Tohanachi-dake or "Door Away Peak", in honour of the legend in which the sun goddess Amaterasu shut herself up in a cave and was coaxed out again when the goddess Ame-no-Uzume performed a comical dance. At which the god Tajikarawo-no-mikoto wrenched away the cave's door and hurled it to earth at this very spot.

I came across this chronicle, the Record of Ariake's Inauguration (Ariake Kaizan Ryakki), in Mr Kumahara Masao's book on the dawn of Japanese mountaineering. By this account, the mountain mystic Yūkai, finding it lamentable that people had altogether given up climbing this sacred mountain, set out with his youngest brother in the sixth year of Kyōho (1721) together with fifteen or so villagers from the hamlet of Itadori at the mountain's foot, and found his way over trackless slopes to the summit. There they stayed overnight and descended the next day.

The first path up the mountain was presumably opened on this occasion, as the chronicle says. And after a small shrine was installed on the summit, people came every summer, from far and wide, in droves to climb the mountain.

For evidence that this custom lasted into the Meiji period, we need look no further than Walter Weston, the mountaineering missionary and so-called Father of the Japan Alps, who climbed Ariake on August 14, 1912, in the first year of Taishō. Presumably he'd heard of Ariake's reputation as a "meizan" of long standing. Most people associate Weston with Mountaineering and Exploration in the Japanese Alps (1896), and rather fewer are aware of his later book, The Playground of the Far East (1918), which also concerns itself mainly with the mountains of Japan. This is probably because there is no translation. It is in this later book that he describes his ascent of Ariake.

Then one day a pregnant woman came along and looked at mount Ariakeyama. She said laughingly: "Well Ariakeyama is not that high ... "
Since that time Mount Ariakeyama stoppe getting higher.

Because of this, the valley at its foot are never completely in the dark. They can never loose their way in a dark night.

At the foot om mount Ariakeyama there lived the farmer 弥左衛門 Yazaemon with his son 弥助 Yasuke.
The son has been abducted by a Demon named Hachimen Daio 八面大王. Yasuke grew up to be a fine young man. One day he helped a yamadori 山鳥 pheasant.
Three days later Yasuke med a beautiful young woman and married her. But Hachimen Daio became quite jealous and wild again.
When 坂上田村麻呂 Sakanoue no Tamuramaro came tho the Kannon Hall to pray, He had a vision telling him to use the feathers of a pheasant tail to make an arrow.
When Yaskue heard this, he begun to worry. But his wife, the incarnation of the pheasant, offered her tail feathers and then disappeared.
With this arrow, the evil Hachiman Daio could be shot down and driven away.
- Another version of this legend tells of Yazaemon being kidnapped by Hachimen Daio while he was looking for medicinal herbs in the forest. His wife had bo bring up Yasuke all by herself.

Momiji Onibito was the wife of Hachimen Daio, but they quarreled all the time. Then came Tamuramaro and killed Hachimen Daio. He also tried to kill Momiji, and his third arrow hit her.
But later she she came back, all crying with pain.

Near the かや場 Kayaba reed field is a huge rock of about 1.5 m length.
Once uopn a time, when Hachimen Daio lived at Mount 矢沢山 Yazawayama a blacksmith brought his tools there to make weapons to fight this Oni, Hachimen Daio got angry and threw the rock in his way. They also say Tamuramaro used this rock to test his sword, so there is now a cut of about 30 cm in the rock.

Once upon a long time ago, in the village of 小栗村 Ogurimura in 諌早 Isahaya (長崎県 Nagasaki) there lived a farmer couple who did not have children.
They went to mount 八天嶽 Hattendake to pray. And then a Tengu came at night . . . well well, the woman got pregnant and bore a strong son.
The boy named Taizo became a strong Sumo wrestler. The Tengu trained him the best he could. Taizo won all the bouts in his village.
Taizo eventually went to Edo and nobody could defeat him. Taizo almost won against the strongest Sumo wrestler in Edo, 鬼ヶ岳 Onigadake, but Onigadake had asked him to let him win, so Taizo lost this one bout (and thus his Tengu power) and then all the other bouts after that and went home much ashamed.
Sometimes the villagers could hear a boulder (ゴットン石 Gotton Ishi) rumble at Mount Hattendake, where Taizo was practicing Sumo with al his former might. He could lift the boulder and carry it to the summit in no time.

The Tanzawa Mountains (丹沢山地 Tanzawa-sanchi) are a mountain range in the Kantō region, in Japan.
It covers the northwestern part of Kanagawa Prefecture and touches the prefectural borders of Shizuoka Prefecture to the west and the Yamanashi Prefecture to the north.

餓鬼道伝説 Legend of the Gakido realm of Hungry Demons

This pass used to be called gakidoo 餓鬼道 the Road of the Hungry Ghosts.
In former times, the warlords 武田信玄 Takeda Shingen and 北条氏康 Hojo Ujiyasu used to fight for this pass. Many of their soldiers did not get enough food and staved on the road.
Their hungry souls now haunt the place.
Even in our times,  people sometimes come and make food offerings in remembrance of the old days.

yabitsu 矢櫃 refers to the boxes and containers they used to keep the arrows.
The soldiers carried rather large quivers with arrows to last for a long war.

There is a long slippery slope with a metal chain to hold on, but it is very difficult to climb. The two chains seem to get lost and invisible in the gas of the slope.

In former times it was called sennin no iwa 仙人の岩 Rock of the Mountain saints.
Seen from 蛭ヶ岳 Hirugatake, the two boulders look like the horns of an Oni.

Kawatengu are close to the Kappa water goblins and thus very special.
At lake Tanzawako is a stone memorial of such a Kawa Tenu. When the region came under water during the construction of the dam, the stone was removed and preserved.

... According to Sekien, long ago, a government minister named Karu no Daijin was sent on a mission to Tang China. This was a period of great movement of culture and ideas between China and Japan, so nothing is strange about that. However, when the envoy failed to return to Japan long after they were overdue, the minister's son, Hitsu no Saishō, began to worry.

Hitsu no Saishō traveled to China to search for his missing father. He traveled far and wide, and in one particular location he came across something he had never seen before: a tōdaiki — a candlestick fashioned out of a living human being! By some combination of strange drugs and sorcery, the man's ability to speak had been removed. His body was covered in tattoos, and a large candle had been placed in his head. He had been installed on a fancy little stand like a piece of furniture.

As Hitsu no Saishō looked in puzzlement at the strange sight, the human candlestick began to shed tears. Unable to speak, the man bit into he tip of his finger until it began to bleed. He scrawled out a few characters in his own blood. Upon reading them, Hitsu no Saishō realized in horror: the tōdaiki was his own father who he had come to China to search for!



The people involved in this story are real.
Hitsu no Saishō was the nickname of Fujiwara no Arikuni, a Heian period noble who lived from 943-1011 CE. Although the story about the tōdaiki is a fabrication, it's an interesting example of where fact and folklore intersect. Because this early urban legend involved real people who were well known to educated readers, it gives the story much more weight.

Mount Onigadake has a rock on its top which looks like the tsuno 角 horn of an Oni.
In former times two wicked Oni used to live on this mountain.
The mountain priest 役行者 En no Gyoja banned these two with a special paralyzing spell, 不動金縛り Fudo no Kanashibari. They could not move any more and eventually became aware of their bad deeds.
The demons changed their ways and became famous disciples of En no Gyoja:
. Zenki 前鬼 and his wife Goki 後鬼 .



The legends about En no Gyoja and the two demons, Zenki and Goki are told in many mountain regions of Japan.

At the graveyard, a bluish fire-light was seen every night. The villagers were afraid, thinking it was the soul of a villager and did not even dare to pass the road during daytime.
玉吉 Tamakichi wanted to see it for himself and went out one evening, carrying 地神の魂の扇 a hand fan with the soul of the Jigami in one hand. When he reached the graveyard, he could see the bluish light. While fanning with his hand fan he went closer. The ground of the grave was still fresh so Tamakich started to dig, found the coffin bound with a cord and pulled it up.
But it was not a coffin but a hookei 包茎 (the dictionary says: a phallus with phimosis).
